Death Speaks

  • Australian Centre for Christianity and Culture 15 Blackall Street Barton, ACT, 2600 Australia (map)

Unfortunately due to COVID and other illness amongst a large number of our artists, we have made the difficult decision to cancel our scheduled performance of ‘death speaks’ on Sunday 26 June.

We are enormously disappointed not to share this music with you. We have been working toward this performance for many months and while we have gone to great lengths in an effort to avoid another cancelled concert, the combination of COVID and flu currently impacting our small ensemble has made it impossible to move forward with this weekend's performance without placing the wellbeing of our choristers at risk and severely compromising the standard of our performance.

If you love what we do, please consider making a gift to Luminescence Chamber Singers and Luminescence Children’s Choir 2022 Annual Appeal.

In some of Schubert’s most famous songs we encounter death not as a concept, but as a character. Nearly 200 years later, Schubert’s portrayals of death personified are the starting point for David Lang’s ‘death speaks’, a song cycle sung from the perspective of death, composed from fragments of 32 Schubert Lieder.

In Death Speaks Luminescence Children’s Choir performs Lang’s acclaimed ‘death speaks’, alongside music inspired by the unknown. This is music that muses on the end; the one certainty and ultimate unknown.
