AJ America
artistic director/mezzo-soprano
AJ is a performer, conductor, and creative producer. She is the Artistic Director of Luminescence Chamber Singers and Children's Choir, and Artistic Associate at the Canberra International Music Festival.
As a vocalist, AJ appears regularly as a soloist and a consort singer, performing with the Luminescence Chamber Singers, Cantillation, the Choir of St James’ King St, and in independent projects. She is a regular collaborator with conductor and pianist Roland Peelman AM, and as director of Luminescence Chamber Singers, has led numerous new music projects, tours, and out-reach activities. In 2023 AJ was awarded the APRA AMCOS Art Music ACT Luminary Award. She was Chair of the ACT Minister’s Creative Council from 2022 - 2023, and continues to serve as a member of the Creative Council.
As a conductor, AJ works primary with young voices. As the founding director of Luminescence Children’s Choir, she has established a leading programs for singers aged 10 - 17 in the ACT, and has conducted performances of major works such as Benjamin Britten’s Children’s Crusade. In 2022, AJ was a guest conductor with Sydney Children’s Choir, and in 2024 she was a guest conductor of Gondwana Voices.
From 2018 - 2019 AJ served as Director of Choirs at Radford College, the Musical Director of Canberra Community Chorale, and a tutor for the ANU School of Music H-Course Vocal Ensemble.
AJ holds a PhB with first class Honours in History (ANU), and has taught 20th Century European History at the ANU, and worked as a research assistant for a number of pre-eminent historians and social scientists, including Rosanne Kennedy and Joy Damousi. She was a contributor to the 2020 Cambridge University Press NSW Year 9-10 History Textbook.
